The star shaped space between multiple rows of round silos are referred to as 'star-bins'.  Due to the high wall surface to volume characteristics of these bins, their discharge can be problematic. 

In this case (twenty years ago) the bins were fitted with air-slides and filled with cement. From all reports they never discharged.

Results:

Removed cement stuck in several star-bins that had not moved in over 20 years.
Star bins now used as transition silos, freeing up standard silos for finished product.

Bottom-line impact:

1. Hundreds of tons of old cement able to be recycled from each star-bin
2. Plant effectively gets extra silo capacity  (est. value $600,000 )
